What size EV charger do I need?

A charger never pushes more power than the car will take. Every EV has its own onboard charger, and that is the ceiling: past it, a bigger unit on the wall changes nothing except the price and the size of the circuit it needs. The table below checks 1,445 vehicle configurations against their published onboard limit, so the question stops being how big a charger can I buy and becomes how big a charger finishes the job.

The short answer

48 amps. It delivers 11.5 kW and fully saturates 85 percent of the vehicle configurations in this database, and 60 models in the catalog are rated at it. Going larger buys headroom only if your specific car can use it, which the sizes below and the section after them spell out.

Stepping down to 40 A saves money on both the unit and the circuit, but it saturates only 45 percent, so it leaves the other 55 percent charging slower than the car is capable of. Whether that matters depends on how many hours the car sits plugged in overnight, not on the charger.

Saturates means the car draws its full onboard rate from that charger, so a larger one would add nothing. Figures assume a 240 volt supply. Vehicle limits are the manufacturer published onboard AC rate; a model year that publishes none is not counted.

The circuit costs more than the charger

Amperage is not only a charger decision. A continuous load has to run on a circuit rated at least 125 percent of it, so a 48 A charger needs a 60 A breaker and the wire to match. Stepping up a size can mean a heavier run, a bigger breaker, and on an older panel a service upgrade that costs more than any charger on this site. Price the electrical work before deciding the amperage, not after.

Is the largest size worth it?
An 80 A unit delivers 19.2 kW and covers 1,444 of the 1,445 configurations here, against 1,227 for 48 A. So it does buy something, but only for the 218 vehicles that accept more than 48 A, concentrated in BMW, Rivian, GMC. For every other driver that capacity is paid for in the unit and the circuit and then never drawn. This database lists 36 models at that rating.
Where do these vehicle limits come from?
The manufacturer's published onboard AC charging rate for each model year, held in the same dataset that powers the per vehicle pages. A configuration that publishes no rate is excluded rather than estimated, which is why the total is 1,445 rather than every car ever sold.
