16 amp EV charger questions
- What breaker and wire does a 16 amp EV charger need?
- A 20 amp breaker. A charger is a continuous load, so the NEC sizes its circuit at 125 percent of its output: 16 x 1.25 = 20 amps, and 20 is the next standard breaker size. The NEC 310.16 60 degree C copper column, the conservative default for circuits of 100 amps or less, gives 12 AWG; where every termination is rated 75 degrees C a smaller gauge can be allowed, and your electrician decides.
- How many miles of range does a 16 amp EV charger add per hour?
- About 11 miles. 16 amps on 240 volts is 3.8 kW; after the roughly 12 percent lost between the wall and the battery, at the EPA's 30 kWh per 100 miles for a typical electric car, that is 11.4 miles each hour. A car whose onboard charger accepts less than 16 amps charges at its own limit instead. On a 120 volt outlet the same current delivers half the power, so roughly half the miles.
